We here at FriedmanFacts.com missed this post from University of Chicago Economics professor Steven Levitt, author of Freakonomics:

The Friedman Institute will increase the scale at which Chicago economics will operate, giving us a better chance of competing with the other top schools for faculty and students. The Friedman Institute will help us compete in the marketplace for ideas.

And what economist — Chicago or otherwise — could argue with that?

In early 2008, University of Chicago faculty proposed an interdisciplinary, non-ideological, research institute to be named after one of the their most famous professors, Milton Friedman. This website was created to counteract misinformation spread by a small, but vocal, group of professors opposing the institute's establishment on ideological grounds.
