Petition

We are petitioning the president of the University of Chicago in support of the Milton Friedman Institute (MFI). There are many reasons to support the institute, and the undersigned agree with one or more of the following:

1. It is reasonable and appropriate for the University of Chicago to establish an institute devoted to the long-standing traditions of rigorous research into topics of economics and society.

2. It is also reasonable and appropriate for this institute to be named after the 20th century's most famous economist, Milton Friedman. Friedman's work both in the academia, where he earned the John Bates Clark medal and Nobel Prize, and popular culture, where he made economics a household name with books, an editorial series, and PBS specials, make him particularly deserving of this honor.

3. This institute will bring the university on par with the economics institutes available to scholars in other top economics programs, such as Stanford University (SIEPR), Yale University (Cowles), the University College at London (Institute for Fiscal Studies), Harvard University and MIT (NBER).

4. MFI will bring renowned visiting scholars from around the world to enhance the university's academic environment. Its seminars and workshops, which would be open to the university broadly, would bring new and diverse ideas to campus.

5. The university has made a wise investment in the Friedman Institute. Both Friedman's academic reputation and public popularity will ensure an excellent return University-wide, both scholarly and financially. With a 5.762 billion dollar endowment, it seems illogical to suggest that the university is compromising other projects because of the Friedman Institute.

6. The donor system described in the proposal is not extraordinary, and will promote stakeholder involvement in the university as a whole and assist university-wide fundraising.

We look forward to watching the Milton Friedman Institute thrive at the University of Chicago and anticipate that it will contribute significantly to the sum of human knowledge and understanding.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
